What Causes Cavities?

Dental cavities are caused by bacteria but can be prevented and treated with the help of Hillview Dental Care

Cavities are small holes in a tooth, caused by decay. The primary way that cavities form is due to bacteria. This bacteria forms into an acid and these acids will eat right through the enamel, creating holes in the teeth. Also, the bacteria can combine with leftover food and create a film which we call plaque. Buildup of plaque causes tooth decay. This process happens over time and eventually leads to holes in your teeth, that are called cavities. You may have a cavity if you are feeling tooth pain or sensitivity, or pain in your gums. Also, if you have a chipped or cracked tooth, you may be at increased risk. If you do not treat your cavities, you will end up in severe pain, could have an infection and could lose your entire tooth. Treatments for cavities vary. If it is a small cavity, the dentist can fill it. We offer both composite and amalgam fillings. Composite fillings are tooth colored and match well with your natural smile. Amalgam fillings are strong, durable and affordable. There may be times that the decay is more severe and you may eventually need a crown. If you are having symptoms of tooth decay, don’t delay. Dr. Greg Meier and his skilled staff are available to help. Give us a call today so we can help get you out of pain and save your tooth!
